P5 – Mrs Kidd

smiley   Welcome to P5   smiley

The children are very busy in Primary 5! They are enjoy the new opportunities that this year brings. We have many children taking part in after school activities, learning a musical instrument and being representatives on the Eco-Committee, School Council and Librarians.

We love learning in P5 too. In Numeracy, we use lots of games and practical activities to help bring abstract concepts to life. We have fun learning lots of new times and division tables, considering how to use bar charts, the properties of shapes, co-ordinates and working with 5-digit numbers for adding and subtracting. That's just the tip of the triangle!

In Literacy, we enjoy our shared class novels; George's Marvellous Medicine (Roald Dahl), Cosmic (Frank Cotrell) and The Butterfly Lion (Michael Morpurgo). We also look at various comprehension skills such as identifying the main idea, sequencing, summarising and inference. We also use Accelerated Reader in P5. The children enjoy pushing themselves to meet their targets and setting their personal word count goals; there are lots aiming to be word millionaires!

We learn about 4 very exciting World Around Us topics in P5:

Northern Ireland - In this topic, we think about the country in which we live, from the first settlers in Ireland, all the way to more recent historical events. We also consider the geography of Northern Ireland such as the counties and our famous landmarks.

Space - We learn lots about the Solar System, such as the names and order of the planets as well as Space exploration. Our topic inspires other areas of learning, such as ICT in which we make PowerPoints about the life of Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon. We also write stories with our own alien characters in them.

The Egyptians - The Egyptians is always a popular topic in P5. We look at the history of Ancient Egypt, specifically how the people lived and how that compares to modern day Egypt. We also look closely at the process of mummification, and look at the science behind it by mummifying tomatoes!

Water - In our final topic of the year, we look at different elements of the water cylce. We also look at water pollution and the negative impact this has on our environment. We also consinder tsunamis, their impact and the measures that are in place to cope with them.

Within our topics we also look at Art, Music & Drama and Science and Technology. We also have PE twice a week. As part of this, we go swimming in Term 3 in Lisburn Leisure Plex.

All children in the class will be encouraged to take charge of their learning at home with any topics they are interested in and read as wisely as possible.  They will also be given the opportunity to use iPads and computers to enhance many areas of the curriculum.
